LASER CUTTER
In this module you will learn how to properly use the “self-serve” laser cutters located in the Architecture Building and in the Applied Sciences Building.
Laser cutters are computer controlled machines that use a laser beam to cut and engrave material. These machines are used in a vast number of scales and industries, from electrical engineering to at-home projects.

SEQUENCE
For this module, we will be sticking to the basics in terms of design and will be focusing on getting you comfortable with the workflow of the laser cutters to ensure your safety as well as that of the machine.
A1: LINE WORK
A2: CUT SHEETS
A3: LASER CUTTING
LINE WORK // ASSIGNMENT ONE
Within this assignment, you will be creating linework that can be read by the laser cutter. There are three different options to choose from in terms of completing this assignment. You may choose to use one of your pre-made vectors, you could use the linework you created in module 1, or you may create something completely new.
CUT SHEETS // ASSIGNMENT TWO
Setting up your cut sheets is one of the most important steps towards laser cutting safely and efficiently. Within this assignment you will be separating out your linework into layers by analyzing the positive and negative space of your drawing as well as determining background, middle ground, and foreground of your work.
LASER CUTTING // ASSIGNMENT THREE
Now you finally get to operate the laser cutter. You should have valid linework all laid out onto cut sheets and ready to get started on the machines. Keep in mind that this assignment is just a brief rundown of the steps you will need to take to operate the lasers. Please read through the laser cutter guide for the software you chose to use (Rhino or Illustrator) before proceeding to cut.
