3D PRINTERS

This will develop your ability to assemble a functioning 3D printing file and geometry for use in 3D printing.

3D Printing is a powerful tool utilized by a wide variety of industries to prototype various parts and products. Within this module, you will be introduced to basic rules and functions commonly used while 3D printing. The objective here is to expand your workflow capabilities, introduce new methods of model making, to increase familiarity with 3D Printers, and further enhance your abilities to interface with CNC equipment.

Recent Examples

MODEL DEVELOPMENT // ASSIGNMENT ONE

Within this assignment, you will choose one of the four options to create a digital model that can be 3D printed at the end of the module. The options include making a clay model, using your laser-cut model from module 2, downloading a pre-made model from the internet, or modeling within a 3D modeling software of your choosing.

3D SCANNING // ASSIGNMENT TWO

If you chose to use your laser cut model or made a clay model, you will be introduced in this assignment to a new form of analog to digital conversion. Using a dedicated 3D scanner allows you to translate a physical object into a editable 3D model that can be 3D printed.

SLICING // ASSIGNMENT THREE

Within this assignment, you will be introduced to 3D print file setup, also known as Slicing. Slicing is the process of applying settings and orienting your model so that the software can generate code to communicate with your printer.

PRINTING // ASSIGNMENT FOUR

Now that you have completed all the necessary steps to prepare your 3D model, it is time to 3D print. You will be able to start your own 3D print on one of the 3D printers here in the CAP Fabrication Lab with the help of an attendant on duty.
