XY PEN PLOTTER

In this module you will learn how to properly use the Axidraw Pen Plotter located in AB 031 of the Architecture Building.

Here you will be introduced to the capabilities of a simple CNC plotting machine while being able to use your favorite pen, pencil, marker, or any other writing utensil. This method of plotting also allows you to be able to plot on virtually any flat surface, such as mat board, foam core, or any material incompatible with a traditional plotter or inkjet printer.

SEQUENCE

For this module we will be sticking to the basics in terms of design and focus on getting you comfortable with the workflow of the machines. You will hand draw an image, scan it properly, trace the image with vector linework, then use the vector linework to program the XY pen plotter.

HAND DRAWING // ASSIGNMENT ONE

Within this assignment you will be using the art of hand drawing to create the foundation from which you will build your skill set in the realm of digital fabrication. We are looking for form generation and development using approaches that are easily accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.

SCANNING // ASSIGNMENT TWO

For this assignment, you will be scanning in your hand-drawn 3” x 3” square. Although this step may seem tedious, it is one of the most important steps to proceed. Without a high-quality scan, the next assignment might not produce the results you hoping for or might prove to be more difficult than necessary.

RASTER TO VECTOR // ASSIGNMENT THREE

Here is where you will start your journey into the digital world. The goal of this assignment is to convert your hand-drawn masterpiece into linework the computer can read. Using vector-based software opens up your art to new mediums and scales, so trace away!

WHY?

All steps in the fabrication process require basic measurement competencies. The Cartesian grid system shows up across manual and digital workflows. Understanding key concepts like point of origin (0,0), axis orientation, and grid-cell sequencing is a basic learning objective of this module.
